The Hall Estate
In the historic town of Bradford-on-Avon, stands the ancestral home of Dr Alex Moulton and the birthplace of a remarkable engineering legacy. For generations, The Hall has been closely connected to innovation and industry. Through the Moulton family’s pioneering work in rubber manufacturing and engineering, the estate became a centre of creativity and enterprise long before the first Moulton bicycle was imagined. For Alex, it was far more than a family home - it was a place where ideas were tested, refined, and brought to life.
After making The Hall his home for more than sixty years, Alex ensured its future by placing it in the care of the The Alex Moulton Charitable Trust. His vision was clear: to protect the estate, its history, and its spirit of innovation for generations to come.
The Home of Moulton Bicycles
From the very beginning, Moulton bicycles were designed and built in close proximity to The Hall. Alex believed that great engineering should be personal, hands-on, and rooted in craftsmanship and he created an environment where this philosophy could thrive. Within the estate’s historic stables and workshops, skilled makers crafted Alex’s original Moulton designs that transformed modern cycling when they launched in 1963. The combination of small wheels, full suspension, and precision frames challenged convention and established a new standard for comfort and performance.
That tradition continues today. Frames are still fabricated in the former stables before moving to the original Bicycle Works for painting, assembly, and final preparation. From Bradford-on-Avon, Moulton bicycles are now shipped to more than 30 countries worldwide, each one built with the same attention to detail and engineering integrity that defined Alex’s original vision. The Hall remains not just Moulton's Bicycle's spiritual home, but an active part of our manufacturing story - a place where heritage and innovation meet every day.
