The Moulton Bike

The Moulton is the ultimate full-suspension, small-wheeled bicycle. Expertly engineered and refined for over 60 years and hand-crafted in England, Moulton bicycles are world renowned for their speed, efficiency, versatility, and comfort.

Rear Suspension

Hydrolastic® or Monosphere

Front Suspension

Flexitor® or Leading Link

Frame Separation

Fixed or separable and stowable

Tough Wheels

Small 17 or 20" wheels with high pressure tyres.

Unique Frame Design

Highly engineered steel frame with low weight and high lateral stiffness.

One Frame Size

One size, low step-through frame for ease of mounting.

Key Feature

Spaceframe

A precision-engineered spaceframe crafted from high-performance alloy steel, with an intricate lattice of tubes that provides remarkable stiffness, strength, and durability.

Frame stiffness is a critical factor in bicycle performance. Lateral rigidity is particularly important, as any rider energy absorbed through frame flex is lost and reduces efficiency. A stiff frame also maintains precise wheel tracking, contributing to secure road holding and stable, confident cornering. The advanced Moulton spaceframe - a highly engineered lattice of small-diameter steel tubes - offers stiffness and strength superior to that of a conventional bicycle frame. Its combination of low weight, high lateral stiffness, and exceptional torsional rigidity delivers a ride that is both lively and amazingly efficient.

Key Feature

Small Wheels

Small wheels with high pressure tyres = less drag, faster acceleration, sharper handling, and a lively ride!

Small, high-pressure wheels have been fundamental to the Moulton design from the outset. A common misconception is that such wheels are suited only to folding or children’s bicycles. In reality, compared with larger bicycle wheels, Moulton’s smaller wheels are stronger, stiffer, and lighter. Their lower moment of inertia enables quicker acceleration and more responsive handling, while their reduced size also results in lower aerodynamic drag. Moulton gearing is designed so that pedalling cadence matches that of a conventional bicycle, eliminating any need to pedal faster.

Key Feature

Suspension

A silky smooth ride with advanced shock-absorbing suspension.

Moulton bicycle suspension has been developed for over 60 years to deliver exceptional shock isolation while maximising rider comfort, road handling, and efficiency. It enables the full benefits of small, rigid wheels, high-pressure tyres, and the ultra-stiff Spaceframe to be realised, resulting in a noticeably more comfortable, “silky” ride than that of a conventional bicycle and significantly reducing rider fatigue. The suspension also enhances traction and lowers rolling resistance. Unlike most suspension bicycles, Moulton's four suspension systems are designed to require little or no maintenance, with no routine suspension servicing necessary.

Key Feature

Separability

A bike that is Compact, Separable, Stowable, Transportable.

All Moulton bicycles are inherently more compact than conventional bicycles, and most models feature separable frames to simplify storage and transport by road, rail, or air. This separability introduces no compromises beyond a small increase in weight; there is no loss of stiffness, comfort, or ride quality. The frame separation is complemented by purpose-designed gear and brake cable connectors, which allow the control cables to disconnect cleanly and quickly without the need for readjustment. When disassembled, the two halves of a Moulton fit easily into the boot of a car or a travel case, while some models can be separated further into five components for even more compact and convenient stowage.

Key Feature

Steel

High-performance steel chosen for enduring strength, real-world durability, and outstanding ride comfort.

Moulton frames are manufactured from a range of premium steels, including Columbus, Reynolds, and Kaisei tube sets, selected to suit the specific requirements of each model. This also includes aerospace-grade stainless steel, used for our polished stainless-steel frames, offering exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and long-term durability. Steel is an outstanding material for bicycle frame construction. Modern high-tensile steels offer greater strength and stiffness than aluminium or titanium alloys, with some achieving comparable or superior strength-to-weight ratios. Steel also excels under fatigue loading, enduring the repeated stresses of cycling while remaining tolerant of minor damage and repairable if scratched or impacted. With its inherent vibration damping, steel delivers a distinctive ride feel and level of comfort that many riders regard as superior to alternative frame materials.
