Moulton 2 Speed
This Series 1 Moulton features a highly unusual specification that sets it apart from any known production model. It could be considered to be a ‘non-separable’ stowaway or perhaps a series 1 model built up with components from an AM2. It is likely to have been assembled in the early 1980s.
The frame is a full series 1 specification, but has a removeable ‘plug-in’ carrier and brazed carrier strut foot, so probably originated as a Moulton 4 speed frame. The holes for cable guides confirm that a two-speed specification was not the original intention. The rear fork has the extra lower reinforcing plate, and is further reinforced by extra plates fitted to the inside edges of the stays. This looks like a factory modification. The rear fork also has braze-ons for a bottle dynamo and spoke lock (neither of these are fitted).
It is equipped with 17” wheels with Mistral pattern alloy rims, and Wolber tyres. The rear hub is a Sachs Duomatic (back-pedal gear change and coaster brake) and the front is an Airlite. The cottered crankset is from Milremo, with a TA alloy chainring. Bluemels Club Special mudguards are fitted.
A GB alloy handlebar stem, and narrow GB ‘stowaway’ alloy handlebar, are fitted. The front brake is a GB Coureur Plus.
This bicycle will be supplied with a "Alex Moulton Heritage Collection" Certificate of Authenticity.
