The Moulton SST is a refined evolution of the TSR - lighter, stiffer and more detailed, yet still grounded in practicality. Continuing the hairpin spaceframe construction with stainless steel dropouts, enlarged pivot bearings and tapered round rear stays, it delivers a more precise and durable ride. Retaining separability and everyday versatility, it extends its scope from city and leisure use into endurance road riding and laden touring. For riders seeking increased structural refinement and responsiveness without moving into the more fabrication-intensive spaceframes, the SST represents an accomplished and versatile all-round Moulton.
Description
Introduced in 2015, the SST represents the natural progression beyond the TSR — not a reinvention, but a measured refinement in material execution, structural detailing and fabrication discipline. Where the TSR establishes the foundation of the hairpin spaceframe, the SST sharpens and elevates it, increasing torsional precision and long-term durability without abandoning the clarity of the original concept.
Finished in durable powder coat and fillet-brazed in Columbus Spirit and Reynolds 525 CrMo steels, the SST combines resilience with controlled weight. It retains Moulton’s continuous wrap-around hairpin construction, in which the slender main rails curve around the head and seat tubes rather than being individually mitred and shot into the structure. This method avoids the labour-intensive joint density of the more intricate spaceframes, yet still forms a disciplined triangulated truss when tied together by the formed zig-zag web brace in solid wire. The straight downtube preserves the familiar geometry and balanced handling that define the hairpin architecture.
The distinction from the TSR lies in refinement. Round-tapered chainstays reduce mass while subtly increasing rear-end responsiveness under load. Stainless steel front stirrup and rear dropouts incorporate cruciform stiffness plates, improving alignment accuracy and long-term wear resistance. Oversized rear pivot bearings increase bearing surface area by approximately 150 per cent, distributing load more effectively and maintaining suspension precision over sustained mileage. A chainstay ‘X-brace’, incorporating an adjustable mudguard mount, further stabilises the rear assembly under braking and luggage loads. Collectively, these elements increase fabrication intricacy and braze concentration within the rear structure while preserving the essential hairpin layout.
The SST employs unified rear architecture, with the bottom bracket attached directly to the rear triangle so that chain load is not transmitted through the suspension pivot. By isolating pedalling forces from suspension movement, long-term wear is reduced and suspension behaviour remains consistent under power. Rear suspension is provided by the Monosphere dry cone unit, delivering progressive springing with mechanical simplicity. At the front, the leading link unicrown fork offers adjustable preload — and therefore ride height — along with damping control. On 22-speed builds, a dual-rate spring sharpens response for faster road riding. The reduced-height front stirrup block lowers weight and lends a more defined visual clarity to the fork assembly.
Fully separable via a centre bolt and alloy locknut, the SST retains the practical transportability central to the Moulton concept. Two bottle mounts and integrated front and rear carrier mounting tubes allow it to function equally as a commuter, endurance road bicycle or lightly loaded tourer. Brake configurations are matched to intended use: dual-pivot calipers for clean road performance, V-brakes for increased tyre clearance on rougher surfaces, and Alfine variants incorporating a rear mechanical disc brake with a curved dropout path to maintain caliper alignment throughout suspension movement.
The result is a bicycle that feels structurally assured under acceleration and composed under load, yet remains unmistakably Moulton in character and ride composure.

Position in the Range
The SST develops the hairpin spaceframe into a more structurally intricate and finely detailed form. While it shares its continuous-rail architecture with the TSR, it introduces lighter rear stays, stainless steel dropouts with cruciform reinforcement, enlarged pivot bearings and additional rear bracing, resulting in increased torsional precision and long-term durability.
For riders drawn toward rougher terrain, the XTB reinforces the same hairpin foundation for gravel and mixed surfaces, while the Flyte offers a distinctly different Y-frame interpretation of the Moulton system. Beyond the hairpin models, the Jubilee adopts lighter-gauge tubing and a more densely fabricated spaceframe, further concentrating structural refinement.
Within this context, the SST represents a balanced expression of the Moulton design - more exacting in execution than the foundational TSR, yet deliberately avoiding the greater fabrication intensity of the more intricate spaceframes.
